Before you start

A rule in your email sends receipt emails on to your SlipInbox forwarding address as they arrive, so nobody has to forward them by hand. You need the address first: open SettingsEmail and choose Copy address from the menu beside it. See Forward receipts by email.

Set the rule to pick out receipt emails only, for example by sender or by words such as “receipt” or “invoice” in the subject. Emails that aren’t receipts are left out, but they crowd Recent emails and hide the ones that matter.

Gmail: confirm the address

Gmail asks you to confirm a new forwarding address once, with a code it emails to that address.

  1. In Gmail on a computer, open Settings, choose See all settings, then the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Press Add a forwarding address, paste your SlipInbox address and confirm.

  2. In SlipInbox, open SettingsEmail. The email from Gmail appears under Recent emails within a minute or two. Open it to see its text, with the code in it.

  3. Back in Gmail, type the code in the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and press Verify.

Leave Gmail’s forwarding of all incoming mail switched off. Otherwise every email you get goes to SlipInbox. Use a filter, as below, to send receipts only.

Gmail: forward receipts only

  1. In Gmail, open the search options at the right of the search box. Fill in what receipt emails have in common, such as the sender or a word in the subject, and press Create filter.

  2. Tick Forward it to, choose your SlipInbox address and press Create filter.

Outlook: create a rule

  1. In Outlook on the web, open Settings, then Mail, then Rules, and press Add new rule.

  2. Name the rule, and add a condition that matches receipt emails, such as who it is from or a word in the subject.

  3. Add the action Forward to, enter your SlipInbox address and save the rule.

Some work and school accounts don’t allow automatic forwarding to outside addresses. If the rule doesn’t send anything, ask whoever manages your email to allow it.

Who SlipInbox sees as the sender

The way each service forwards decides who SlipInbox sees as the sender, and so whether an email is read straight away.

Gmail
Keeps the shop’s address as the sender. The first email from each shop waits under Unknown senders. Choose Allow and read, and that shop’s later emails are read straight away.
Outlook
Sends the email on from your own mailbox. If that is your SlipInbox sign-in address, it is read straight away. If it is a shared mailbox, add it as a contact first; see Contacts.

To check the rule works, wait for the next receipt email and look under Recent emails; see What happened to an email and Decide on unknown senders.
