Categories

Add and remove categories. A merchant's receipts follow the category you choose.

Add a category

Categories sort receipts by kind of spending, such as Fuel or Meals. SlipInbox picks one for each receipt it reads, from your list. Admins and accountants keep the list.

  1. Open SettingsCategories and press Add category.

  2. In Add a category, fill in:

    • Name, up to 48 characters. Two categories can’t share a name.
    • Description, optional, up to 200 characters. Say what belongs here; it helps SlipInbox choose.
    • UNSPSC code, optional: the 8-digit product code some accounting systems ask for.
    • UNSPSC title, optional, kept only when there is a code.
    NameFuelUNSPSC code15101500
  3. Press Add category. Receipts read from now on can get it.

You can also add a category while editing a receipt: type the name in its category list and choose New category. The receipt moves to the new category once it is added.

Categories on receipts

A receipt without a category shows an Uncategorized pill on the list. To choose one, open the receipt and pick from its category list; see Edit a receipt. To set one category on many receipts, see Work on many receipts at once.

When you choose a category on a receipt, its merchant takes that category as its default. That merchant’s new receipts then get the same category on their own. You can see and change the default on the merchant; see Merchants and their branches.

Change or remove a category

On SettingsCategories, open a category to change its name, description or code, and press Save. Receipts that use it show the new name.

To delete it, open it and press Remove. If receipts use it, choose under Receipts what happens to them:

  • Clear the category on those receipts, so they become uncategorized, or
  • Move to … another category.

Then press Remove category.

This changes every receipt that uses the category, including approved and exported ones. Files you already exported keep the old category. Removing a category cannot be undone.
